Things I’m No Longer Saving for Someday

A reminder to stop saving the dress, the candle, the trip, the idea and your own time for a perfect future

There is a strange habit many of us inherit without noticing: saving the beautiful things for later.

The good candle waits untouched on the shelf. The dress waits for a better dinner. The plates wait for guests. The trip waits for the perfect year. The idea waits until we feel more ready. Meanwhile, ordinary life keeps happening. I am beginning to think “someday” is a wonderful place for dreams and a terrible place to store an entire life. Wear the beautiful clothes. Use the good dishes. Light the candle. Start planning the trip. Begin the idea before you feel completely ready. Print the photographs. Keep a little of your own time instead of giving every free hour away. The special occasion is not always coming later. Sometimes the special occasion is that you are here, the coffee is warm, the flowers are open and this ordinary day is part of your one beautiful life.
